Our Story

With all the noise about being “sick of smut” and how “dangerous” spicy books are, we decided it was time to step up and be part of the conversation. Meet Alyssa, our founder. She grew up in a conservative household where conversations about sex were off-limits, self-exploration was discouraged, and purity was prioritized. But books? They were her escape. YA romance gave her a space to explore her sexuality in a healthy way—whether it was sapphic stories or “closed door” romances where relationships were built on consent, emotional depth, and the beauty of longing and imagination. As Alyssa grew into womanhood, now a wife and a mother, she found herself reconnecting with the romance and romantasy genre. This time with open-door stories and discovered how these books helped her heal from trauma, including SA and domestic violence. What society often shames, became her pathway to reclaiming her sensuality and embracing her desires without guilt or fear. Now, Alyssa wants to empower others to take back their sexual power, explore their own desires, and dive into their sensuality with confidence, free from judgment. That’s why Between The Covers Co. was created—a mobile romance bookstore based in Monmouth/Ocean County, New Jersey.
